Mouthguards are made from a plastic material that is strong and tough and can be easily moulded to fit precisely over your teeth and gums. Mouthguards are protective pieces of equipment to help prevent injury to the mouth — protecting the teeth, lips, cheeks and tongue.
Having a dentist take special impressions will create a guard to best fit your mouth — teeth and adjacent gums — so as to provide the best protection when you are playing “contact” sports.
The procedure is very simple; your dentist takes impressions of your teeth, both upper and lower. The plaster models of your teeth are then sent to the dental laboratory where a technician makes the mouthguard which is returned to the dentist for fitting/adjustment.
Your sports mouthguard will need replacing over time. Just bring it to your dental check-ups so that your dentist can check it for “wear and tear”.
